On 8 November 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a German mechanical engineer and physicist, invented X-Ray imaging which was a 2D projected medical imaging technique. 3D medical imaging started with Computed Tomography (CT) technique in the 1970s invented by South African-American physicist Allan MacLeod Cormack and British electrical engineer Godfrey Hounsfield. CT is most prominently used in medical diagnosis. In order to create to form 3D digital models from CT data, marching cube algorithm, a computer graphics algorithm, was developed by William E. Lorensen and Harvey E. Cline in 1987 for extracting polygonal meshes of isosurfaces from a three-dimensional discrete scalar field (the elements of which are sometimes called voxels). Also in 1987, Stereolithography (STL), an industrial 3D data format for 3D Printing, was invented by the Chuck Hull. Hull's contribution was not only the STL file format but also the digital slicing and infill strategies common to many processes today. For 3D printing processes, a toolpath generation software called “slicer” is used for the conversion of a 3D digital model to specific instructions for the printer. Today, the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and the Stereolithography or "SLA" printers are the most popular 3D Printer types. In 2022, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Hospital Authority has filed a patent on haptical corrected and Ultrasound Visible 3D Printing technique for high risk medical procedure trainings and simulations.

Cancer continues to be the major cause of death in the world, and the best way to reduce mortality is prevention by early detection. It is an established fact that low dose CT scan, mammogram and colonoscopy are effective tools for early detection of lung cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer, respectively. However, cost, efficiency and availability are the main obstacles for generalization of these preventive tools. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a potential solution that may reduce cost and improve efficiency, and at this presentation, we shall review current scientific data supporting the application of AI in cancer prevention. The other novel approach is detection of circulating tumor DNA (cfDNA) from blood. The objective is to find early-stage cancer with a simple blood test. With the advents of next generation sequencing and fragmentomics, this approach may become reality in near future.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has developed a novel algorithm specifically designed for the Hong Kong International Airport to estimate standing water conditions on the runway. This is to ensure full compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization's requirements for real-time reporting of runway surface conditions from November 2021 onwards. HKO combines real-time data from in-situ present weather sensors as well as radar. Supplemented with rainfall nowcasts, the system automatically monitors the rainfall over the airport runway 24 hours a day and provides real-time estimation of the standing water conditions on the runway to the Integrated Airport Centre. The system aims at mitigating the risk of runway excursions by aircraft and enhancing aviation safety by allowing an improved flight crew assessment of take-off and landing performance.
